Did you know that technology to help keep seniors safe has been in use for a long time, such as life alert pendants and “nanny cams”?
Incorporating systems that use data to make decisions, Artificial Intelligence (AI), is new, however. Let’s think of AI technology in this manner… sensors collecting small bytes of data which is then analyzed by a computer script, known as algorithms, concludes actions or patterns in activities of daily living. With this information, the AI technology determines if things are different in what is considered a normal senior’s routine and sends an alert to a family member, caregiver, senior living community or emergency responders via a smart phone or iPad.
AI technology can significantly enhance the lives of seniors by promoting independence, safety, and well-being through smart home automation, medication management, and even virtual companionship. It can help seniors stay active, engaged, and connected while also providing valuable support and insight.
When thinking about AI technology to enhance independence and safety, smart home automation can automate everyday tasks like adjusting a room temperature, lighting and even security systems to make everyday life easier for a senior. Wearable devices or home sensors can detect potential falls, unusual activity, or changes in behavior for which alerts are sent to families, caregivers, senior living communities or emergency responders to ensure timely intervention and proactive support. In late 2015, an AI based fall detection technology system, SafelyYou, was created to help detect falls. AI can also help seniors take their medication on time and in the correct dosages by providing reminders.
Social engagement and well-being can increase for seniors when using AI-powered robots / virtual assistants because they can provide companionship, engage in conversation and help seniors stay connected with family and friends. AI-powered games and exercises can also help seniors maintain cognitive function and improve mental agility.
In addition to SafelyYou for AI-based fall detection, ElliQ is a social AI companion robot. MyndVR offers VR content customized for seniors to provide social interaction too. Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri can provide hands-free assistance and reminders as well.
While a variety of AI technology is already available, seniors need to be open and comfortable with the technology and having the technology in their home. Understanding what AI technology is and how it works, and its benefits is the first step. Providing examples of already existing AI technology in a senior’s home is key, i.e. Alexa or Siri.
AI technology is here to stay for seniors and will continue to play an increasingly important role in their lives. By using it, seniors’ lives will be enhanced due to the benefits.
