Expert Tips for Mastering Winter Gardening & Deer-Proofing Your Yard by Frank Schaffer of The Landscape Group, Inc.

Gardening enthusiasts often worry about the challenges winter poses, especially when it comes to protecting their beloved plants from harsh weather and curious deer. As winter approaches and temperatures drop, many homeowners face the yearly challenge of landscaping maintenance and deer-proofing their yards.

Understanding Winter Plant Protection

Winter can be unpredictable, especially with fluctuating temperatures. The unexpected cold spells, such as those dropping below 10 degrees, are rare occurrences but can cause concern for landscapers. To protect plants during these times, wrapping them is an option, though many homeowners might find this task daunting without professional help. However, it’s important to note not to water your plants during these frosty periods, as this could harm them.

Turning Off Irrigation Systems

Turning off your irrigation system at the first frost is highly recommended. While the exact timing can vary, in many regions, November or around Thanksgiving is when the first frost occurs. By doing so, you can protect your plants from potentially damaging freezing water, and be ready to turn it back on around April 15th, traditionally known as the last frost day.

Selecting Hardy Plants for a Winter-Ready Landscape

Choosing the right plants is key to a visually appealing winter garden. Opt for evergreens like holly or juniper which not only add a splash of color but also provide structure. These plants maintain their foliage throughout the winter, offering a consistent and beautiful backdrop.

Another option is to plant winter-flowering shrubs. Hellebores, commonly known as Christmas roses, bring delightful blossoms when most other plants lie dormant. These hardy flowers are capable of blooming in cold temperatures and add a much-needed touch of brightness.

The Deer Dilemma

In areas like metro Atlanta, the deer population has noticeably increased over the last decade. The rise in deer numbers poses not just a threat to landscapes but also raises safety concerns, especially during mating seasons when deer activity increases. For homeowners, this means that selecting the right plants is crucial in keeping their yards intact.

It is important to choose plants that deer are less likely to eat. While no plant is completely deer-proof, some species are known to be deer-resistant:

  • Yews and Hollies: These plants are not favored by deer, making them excellent choices for your yard.

  • Gardenias: Known for their beautiful flowers, gardenias are surprisingly resilient to deer grazing.

  • Boxwoods: Another plant that typically doesn't attract deer, boxwoods can add structure and greenery to your yard.

  • Butterfly Bushes: The dwarf variety of butterfly bushes, especially the 'Pugster,' has shown great success in deterring deer.

  • Mature Azaleas: While young azaleas might be at risk, mature ones are usually left alone by deer.

Throughout my years of experience, I have continuously experimented to find plant varieties that are less appealing to deer. For those dealing with significant deer issues, the combination of these resistant plants has minimized the need for unsightly netting or unreliable sprays and sensors. The Landscape Group has found success with these plants, and deer often bypass our selections in favor of more appetizing options elsewhere.

Conclusion

Deer-proofing your landscape doesn't have to mean sacrificing aesthetics. By choosing the right plants and following best practices for winter protection, you can enjoy a beautiful, thriving garden year-round. With the right choices, your yard can be both beautiful and resistant to deer-related damage.
